Artivism for Peace
What can art do for children from a minority group? What can art do in face of historical and contemporary issues? What can art do for an indigenous community whose challenges seem like a nine-headed hydra that nothing seems possible to change? And what about the context of the indigenous Mapuche children in Chile, living the reality of poverty, social vulnerability, underprivileged public schools longing for an opportunity to express themselves and change the general perception of ¨the Indian¨?
Artivism for Peace believes that collaborative art workshops provides a wonderful chance for these children to reflect, express and create works of art and spaces to deal with issues and challenges they face, while providing a constructive, fun environment to interact and give the international community a chance to appreciate their cultural heritage, perspective and the unique language of peace they contribute.
Having seen the magic of art as therapy and healing in What Color Do You See, I wanted to take art and activism, "artivism" to an international level, to the beautiful country of Chile which has protected me in a camping tent during the 8.8 earthquake last year and accepted me as if a daughter of her own. Working with a group of artists in Santiago with a passion for equality and social change, Artivism for Peace was born.
